Les Champs de rêves, St Lazare

Most of the botanical gardens that I've visited are the product of large public or private organizations with a large staff of permanent or volunteer employees. How then can a small group design, plant and maintain a large garden open to the public over several months each year? But this is exactly what one landscape nursery near Montreal has accomplished. The Champs de Rêves in St. Lazare is an interesting garden that you can explore for an hour or so. When I visited in late August, a large variety of flowers - like lilies, hostas, and echinacea - were in bloom as well as a field of Russian sage (alas the lavender was finished by then). There were also plenty of mosaic-culture sculptures composed of carefully selected plants, a maze (though they called it a labyrinth), and other attractions like the arch composed of cake-shaped logs that I've sketched. I certainly admire the tenacity of a local landscape nursery to have maintained such a garden. Hopefully a well-known adage will be realised: 'If you build it they will come'.
